Banquet
The Annual Banquet of the Abingdon
Volunteer Fire Company was held Saturday Evening
February 21st 2007, completing their
eighty second year of dedicated service to the
citizens of Harford County. The event was held at
the Level Volunteer Fire Company banquet hall, and
dinner was served by their ladies auxiliary.
Abingdon’s fire station was manned during their
absence by an engine crew from Company 5, Havre de
Grace. Abingdon’s paid paramedic crew was on duty to
provide EMS services.
In his welcoming
address, Fire Company President Jerry Anderson Sr.
stated that Banquet Night has a special
significance. It is a time when we bring our
membership together at the end of a year of service
to our community for an evening of social
togetherness and to recognize those members who
contributed their volunteer services in a special
way during the past year.
The Master of
Ceremonies for this special event was Tom Schaech,
President of the Harford County Volunteer Fire and
Ambulance Association. During his address, President
Schaech made special mention of the increased fire
and EMS responsibility which faces Abingdon due
their rapidly growing population. He noted that
Abingdon’s EMS and fire calls are increasing by ten
percent each year. This past year Abingdon responded
to 4,617 EMS calls and 1,704 Fire calls for a total
of 6,321 calls for service.
In attendance
were representatives of our State and Local
Government who participated in the awards ceremony
presenting citations from the Senate, House of
Delegates and County Government recognizing the
following members:
Chris Shay,
Named EMS Person of the Year by EMS Assistant Chief
Linda Dousa.
Keith
BoSheers, Named Firefighter of the year by Fire
Chief Albert Bair.
The
Administration award of the year was awarded to 2nd
Vice President Patty Autry, presented by President
Jerry Anderson. The award was in recognition of
Patty’s professionalism as director of Human
Resources for Abingdon’s 215 members.

Alarm Fire 801 Box
At
approximately 1:27am on Friday April 7, 2006, the
Joppa-Magnolia Volunteer Fire Company was alerted
for a report of a house on fire in the 600 block of
Philadelphia Road in Joppa. Units from the
Joppa-Magnolia Volunteer Fire Company, under the
command of Assistant Chief Erik Petersen, arrived to
find a working fire in the basement of a single
family two story home. The fire quickly spread
throughout the home due to construction type, fire
load, and delay in detection.
There were no reported injuries resulting from the
two alarm fire. It took approximately 2 hours to
bring the blaze under control. Approximately 55
firefighters from Joppa-Magnolia volunteers,
Abingdon volunteers, Bel Air volunteers, Fallston
volunteers, Kingsville volunteers, White Marsh
volunteers, and Aberdeen Proving Ground worked this
incident for nearly four hours. The home was a total
loss. The cause of the fire was undetermined
at the time of this press releases and is under
investigation by the Maryland State Fire Marshal’s
office. The occupants of the home were being
assisted by other family members.
